Western Swing : The Kinky Fingers from Colorado !

We haven’t featured Americana, Western Swing and Santa Fe Surf music yet. But when this music comes straight from Denver, Colorado and is created by an enormously talented band, we gladly do.

Today, I’m happy to introduce Tayler Doyle (vocals), Travis Page (drums) and Nate Wilson (bass) : The Kinky Fingers. The band started out as a collective, a concept that remains rooted within the band’s music since they also play with other musicians depending on the projects. What do musicians have in common? They all kink their fingers in order to play. Here, they had their name. If you’re a big Rolling Stones’ fan, you’ll notice the reference to their album’s title “Sticky Fingers”.

Their music draws from Folk, Blues, Rock, Bluesgrass, Country, Jazz, Santa Fe Surf, Western swing and much more.

“I’ve never wanted to categorize our music”, Tayler told The Explorer Mag, “We have such a vast well of music that came out of America, not to mention some of the greatest folk musicians and story tellers around. To me it’s all fair game these musics are part of my history, they’re part of my story and my culture, all of them are. So in time, my ambition is to create new music in the traditions and styles of these musics.”.

The band released a series of 3 EPs before pressing and releasing their first LP during the summer of 2014 (Stay tuned !) : Make You Happy (with the amazing song “More than Enough“), White River City (more Western Swing oriented) and Santa Fe Surfin’ (due out in January).

Make You Happy has a rock and soul thing going on.” Tayler told The Explorer Mag, “White River City is more western swing with a touch of surf, hence the genre “Santa Fe Surf”. I was listening to a lot of Johnny Cash and The Growlers at the time so that may have rubbed off, “Dead in Yer Grave” is about a night I had down in Santa Fe and “Whiskey” was influenced by a Hank Williams song (“Ramblin Man”) and old sayings my pops would say to my brother and I as a kids. “

The band will kick off their White Wave Tour with Bloodhound. They’ll be travelling around Colorado’s mountain towns out to Salt Lake City “boardin’ with dawn and playing at dusk”. “It’s gonna be a blast!” Tayler said, “So if you’re in Salt Lake at the beginning of January we’ll be here! Come out on by!” Make sure to book your tickets !

In French, we have an idiom that says “Avoir un coup de foudre” (“to be struck by lightning” = To fall head over heels for something). Tayler told me he was struck by lightning as a kid. If you’re into Americana music, we guarantee their music will have the same effect on you !
